A Tweet Heard ‘Round the World

Posted on: October 29th, 2011 by Bryan 2 Comments

Malcolm Gladwell asserted that the Revolution Will Not Be Tweeted. He boldly claimed that “social media can’t provide what social change has always required1.”

He was dead wrong.

“Facebook brought down the regime,” said Sally Toma, a leading Egyptian protest organizer2. Disruptive technologies can not only bankrupt aging companies, they can help people topple governments.Years ago, Gladwell agreed. In his seminal book “The Tipping Point,” he taught marketers that ideas are epidemics that can spread like wildfire.

We are now in the throes of a paradigm shift, one that is downsizing the world into a large village. I placed my bet that open source systems would democratize society. As we huddle within the walled fortresses of Facebook, openness somehow still prevails, like flowers pushing through the cracks in sidewalks.

Gartner, one of the world’s leading IT advisory companies, is researching how one entrepreneur’s vision can crumble a whole industry. They have identified 10 disruptive technologies3 that iconoclasts like Jobs, Mark Randolph, Craig Newmark, Jordan Ritter, and Zuckerberg have harnessed.

Perhaps Malcolm may be worried about his business–publishing. The New York Times‘ publisher Arthur Sulzberger, Jr., stated, “We will stop printing the NYT sometime in the future, date TBD4.” The Gray Lady is on the move with close to 4M followers on Twitter.

Gladwell only has 100,000+. He best get to Tweeting.
